Chiang Rai is a city with around 70,000 inhabitants in the mountainous north of Thailand near the border with Laos and Myanmar. It is home to a number of culturally historic sights that are also magnificent architectural masterpieces by local artists, such as the Blue Temple, the White Temple or the Golden Clock Tower. Here is a collection of sights worth seeing, for the BAAN DAM MUSEUM there is an individual page and urban art can be found on the page Streetart Chiang Rai. The great photos were collected by DIANA and THOMAS aka the NOMADS ON WHEELS, who travel the globe with their mobile home. Unfortunately, they had to leave their cool orange van behind for this trip and took a plane to beautiful Thailand.
Wat Rong Suea Ten – Blue Temple – PHUTTHA KABKAEW
The WAT RONG SUEA TEN temple complex was built between 2005 and 2016 and is a masterpiece of architectural art, decorated with countless filigree sculptures and psychedelic visual images. The construction was already initiated by the local community in 1996 to replace an old abandoned temple that previously stood on this site. The unconventional and neo-traditional design was implemented by local artist PHUTTHA KABKAEW aka SALA NOK, who learned from CHALERMCHAI KOSITPIPAT while working on the famous WAT RONG KHUN, the so called „White Temple“.

The painter, designer and sculptor CHALERMCHAI KOSITPIPAT was born on February 15th 1955 in Chiang Rai and is globally known for his fantastic paintings, but above all for his major project WAT RONG KHUN, the „White Temple“, whose construction began in 1997 and is not yet completed. The eclectic style and surrealist temple site with elements from Buddhism and Hinduism, completely in white, can be found between the small suburbs of Bua Sali and Pa O Don Chai.

Chalermphrakiat Clock Tower – CHALERMCHAI KOSITPIPAT
The Chalermphrakiat Clock Tower was built in 2005 to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday. Adorned with golden patterns, the city’s landmark was designed by local artist CHALERMCHAI KOSITPIPAT and is located at the roundabout where Banphaprakan Road meets Suk Sathit and Chet Yot Road. The artwork is a beautiful sight, especially at night with special lighting, and a mesmerizing ten-minute light and sound show is held daily at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.
Wat Huay Pla Kang – PHOP CHOK TISSUWASO
The magnificent WAT HUAY PLA KANG, the „Temple of Mercy“, is located on the northern outskirts of Chiang Rai on the banks of the Kok River. The huge statue of Kuan Yin or Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, can be seen from afar, enthroned on the hill. The place is not only a religious site, but also a center of social welfare for the disadvantaged such as orphans and the elderly. The complex was re-established in 2007 by the monk PHOP CHOK TISSUWASO on a previous temple here and dedicated it to the goddess Kuan Yin. The 49-meter-high Phop Chok Dhamma Chedi pagoda and the surrounding unique structures offer Buddhist and architectural influences from Thailand, China and Europe.

There is another temple with the same name further south in Chiang Mai.
